Jodie Gonzalez is valedictorian of the 2014 Avinger graduating class

The 2014 Valedictorian of Avinger Independent School District is Jodie Gonzalez. Jodie is the granddaughter of Phil and Anita McDonald. After graduation, she plans to attend Texas Woman’s University and eventually be a certified registered nurse anesthetist. 
 
While in high school Jodie participated in basketball, cheerleading, tennis, track, the National Honor Society, FFA and cross country.

Smith’s kickoff WATCH D.O.G.S. Program at South Elementary

A retired teacher and former school board member stepped up to the plate when they purchased the program and organized WATCH D.O.G.S. at South Elementary School in Daingerfield. Chris and Denise Smith have introduced the program at South Elementary School and held kickoff meetings to see how many fathers would be interested in joining the program.

Inmate prescription bid accepted

One lone bid was received and approved for Morris County inmate prescriptions by the Morris County Commissioners at their May 12 meeting. Med Shop in Hughes Springs was the only pharmacy to submit a bid; therefore, were awarded the contract. 
 
“The contract says they will deliver, but if someone needs something immediately, someone from the jail will go get it,” County Auditor Shana Solomon said.

Early voting underway in the primary runoff election; ends May 23

Early voting in the primary runoff election began May 19 and will end May 23. 
 
In Cass County, there will be a runoff between candidates running on the Republican ticket for District Clerk. The contenders are Jamie Price Albertson and Pam Jaynes.

Mustang band captures First Division Trophy

The Hughes Springs Junior high students in seventh and eighth grade band went to Canton on May 9 for the SoundPost Music Festival. They played two prepared pieces on stage for three judges.

Avinger first graders receive tooth kits

All first graders at  Avinger Elementary School recently received free prevent tooth decay kits through the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club. A.J. Reinhardt of Hickory Hill Masonic Lodge led members in assembling and delivering kits to the school.

Joseph Terrell of Lone Star earns a scholarship

Joseph Terrell of Linden - Kildare High School has been selected to receive the University Scholarship from Southern Arkansas University. This scholarship includes $4,500 per semester and has a four-year value of $36,000.
 
He is the son of Shasta Terrell.

Local voter apathy is appalling

There were only 184 people who cast their vote in the Hughes Springs School District school board election, meaning approximately 7 percent of the registered voters exercised their rights on May 10. There are 2,561 registered voters in the school district.
