Residents celebrate National Night Out

Music blasting from the gazebo, people eating hotdogs, and students playing football were just some of the scenes from Daingerfield City Park on Oct. 4. No, it was not the beginning of Daingerfield’s annual Fall Festival, but rather something with a greater meaning than just food and fun.

In towns across Texas, police officers and residents gathered to participate in National Night Out. The scene in Daingerfield was set at the city park, where Daingerfield Police officers mixed and mingled with Daingerfield residents. There was face painting, balloons, and karaoke. Sergeant Corey Parr and Officer Ruben Ayala played football with local students. Sergeant Susan Laake handed out balloons to children, while the local tattoo artist painted faces for anyone willing.

Adjusting to life after breast cancer

The moment a person receives a breast cancer diagnosis, his or her life changes immeasurably. The roller coaster of emotions begins, and suddenly this person is thrust into a schedule of doctor’s appointments, treatments and visits from friends and family.

The World Cancer Research Fund International says breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and men and is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in 140 of 184 countries worldwide. Despite that prevalence, the five-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with localized breast cancer (cancer that has not spread to the lymph nodes or outside the breast) is 98.5 percent, says the American Cancer Society. Survival odds increase as more is learned about breast cancer and more people take preventative measures, including routine screenings. Today, there are nearly three million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.

Fall Festival draws crowd to downtown

Fall means several things in East Texas. Cooler temperatures, muted fall colors, and Friday night football. In Daingerfield, the second weekend in October also brings fun, food, and festivities to downtown. This year’s Daingerfield Days Fall Festival was no exception.

This year’s festivities began on Thursday, Oct. 6, with the Community Stew and Style Show, hosted by the Business & Professional Women’s Club. The club gives out scholarships each spring to two deserving female graduates, and the stew, style show, and cake auction serves as the Club’s main fundraiser. This year, boutiques featured in the Style Show included Lula Roe, the Tiki Hut in Hughes Springs, and Something Special in Daingerfield. The cake auction saw 16 cakes bring in just under the amount needed to fund the scholarships. With an added donation following the auction, the event raised over $1,000 to cover the scholarships.
