Tiger Secure District 16AAA Title With 55-42 Victory Over Mt. Vernon

By Josh Terry
Bee Staff Writer

The Daingerfield Tigers needed a victory over the Mt. Vernon Tigers to secure the District 16AAA title and that they got with a 55-42 win over Mt. Vernon at home. It was obvious from the opening tip that Mt. Vernon was going to try to slow the tempo of the game down on the “Running Tigers From Daingerfield.” Mt. Vernon was successful in the beginning of the game as the first quarter would end in a 10-10 tie. Daingerfield would then open things up in the second quarter out scoring Mt. Vernon 17 to 9 and taking a 27-19 lead in at the half.

Churches celebrate Ash Wednesday

By Toni Walker Editor of The Bee

This week, many church-goers will attend special services in observance of Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is Feb. 18.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period that concludes with Palm Sunday, and is commonly observed by Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, United Methodists and Lutherans.
During the service, parishioners will receive the mark of the cross in ash on their forehead. The ashes are an ancient symbol of mourning. The next 40 days leading to Palm Sunday are spent in prayer, fasting, and seeking repentance for sins. The heart of Ash Wednesday is a humbling of oneself through fasting and prayer.

Former Tiger assistant coach to be honored

By Toni Walker Editor of The Bee

The 1983 Daingerfield Tigers are known as one of the best football teams in the state. Now, they can boast two Hall of Honor coaches.
Former Tiger head Coach Dennis Alexander was inducted into the East Texas Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 2014. “Coach A”, as he is known was introduced by his longtime assistant, Jacky Mayfield. On Feb. 21, Coach A will return the favor, introducing Mayfield at the former assistant’s induction.
During their time in Daingerfield, Alexander and Mayfield teamed up to lead two state championship teams, including the 1983 Tigers, who allowed eight points in 16 games, en route to the championship. The team set numerous records, including most shutouts (14) and consecutive shutouts (13). They were the first team to go 16 and zero.

Carol Griffis honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award

HUGHES SPRINGS—A longtime educator known for challenging students to be their very best has been honored for her contributions to the community. On Jan. 24 the Hughes Springs Chamber of Commerce presented Carol Griffis with its Lifetime Achievement Award. There is an old saying, “I wasn’t born in Texas but I go here as fast as I could.” This is true of Griffis, who moved to Hughes Springs with her parents and two brothers at an early age. Her father came to Hughes Springs to help construct the Lone Star Steel Mill. As a student at Hughes Springs High, Griffis was active in band, student government and was an honor student. After graduation, she married William Johnson Griffis. Later she was encouraged by friend Carolyn Smires to attend college.
