The Hughes Springs library is offering a free service to would-be gardeners. The Library is partnering with Cass County Extension and 4-H to offer patrons the opportunity to check out free seed packets for planting.

Titled “From Dirt to Dinner,” the program allows patrons to check out six packets of heirloom seeds, complete with planting instructions. According to librarian Jean Austin, there is no charge for the seeds, all they ask is that participants bring seeds from their plans to replenish the supply.

The 5th Annual Doug Sibley Memorial Scholarship 5K Fun Run and 1 Mile Run is being held in Omaha on March 14, 2015. Proceeds from the fun run go to the Doug Sibley Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is presented each year to one Paul Pewitt High School senior male athlete that exhibits the qualities that former Pewitt coach Doug Sibley would have looked for and expected from his athletes. These qualities include hard work, dedication, desire, leadership, and a never quit attitude.Several former scholarship recipients have been able to further their education beyond high school with the help of the Doug Sibley Memorial Scholarship. Coach Doug Sibley and his family moved to Omaha and he began coaching at Paul Pewitt High School in the fall of 1980.

The Daingerfield Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 pm in the Daingerfield High School Cafeteria, honoring the community and its leaders. The Daingerfield Chamber of Commerce will present the following awards: Community Pride Award, Community Service Award, Citizen of the Year, and Business of the Year. And the nominees are … Community Pride Award:-Nominees: Daingerfield Public Library, Business & Professional Women’s Club, First United Methodist Church of Daingerfield, and Ounce of Prevention. 

Community Service Award:-Nominees: The Next Level- First Pentacostal Church, Piney Woods Civic Center, Daingerfield Police Department Community Service Program, and Daingerfield- Lone Star ISD Employees. Citizen of the Year:-Nominees: Keitha Nilsson, Bret McCoy, Martha Baker, and Travis Miller.

 

Republican Women of Northeast Texas showed the love to local law enforcementagencies this past Valentine’s Day weekend. “I believe our Policemen need all the help they can get and so did our group of Republican Women of Northeast Texas,” said Mrs. Carol Munn, RWNT Reporter. After their scheduled Board Meeting on Feb13, they packed cookies for Franklin, Titus, Camp and Morris County Sheriff ’s Departments & City Policemen.

Brent Giddens, a senior at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and a graduate of Hughes Springs in 2011, brought home the gold in the 60meter hurdles in Southland Conference indoor chamipionships, Birmingham, Alabama recently. While in high school at Hughes Springs, Giddens was a stand out athlete in football, track and basketball. Being fast was a by product of Brent and his athleticism, he was the type of athlete that was going to be competitive no matter the sport. He continues to show that in track on the college level. Year in and year out he is at the top or among the leaders in the Southland Conference and has been for the last three years.

 

The Northeast Texas Community College Eagles (NTCC) softball team split four games in the Coyote Chillout tournament this weekend, hosted by Weatherford College.

The Lady Eagles stand at 7-7 going in to the last stretch of games before conference play starts. Hailey Dixon led the team during Friday’s first game against Weatherford pitching all seven innings and only allowing two runs, the Eagles rounded the bases six times to win the game 6-2. The LadyEagles jumped quickly onto the board in the second game against Cisco College but, despite a strong opening with four runs in the first inning, dropped the game 6-10. Saturday’s first game against Hill college ended with a 2-4 loss, but the Lady Eagles came back during their final game of the tournament against Weatherford College to win 2-1 in extra innings.

Centershot Ministries, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a ministry which teaches students the basics of archery, and uses that as an outreach to help churches reach their communities. One man, Jonathon Nix, or “Big Red”, as he is known, has brought this ministry to the Daingerfield area.

“I got interested in archery in 2006 and began bow fishing,” Mr. Nix said. “I started at the pro shop in New Diana and worked there from 2010 to 2012, and that is when I fell in with archery and teaching kids the trade of archery,” he said. Nix stated that he and the leaders want the kids to know that they car for them. “They need love,” stated Jennifer Nix, his wife.
