Thursday, April 7, was designated as the National Day of Prayer. Communities all across America gathered together to pray and meditate. The National Day of Prayer got its start in 1952, when Public Law 82-324 was passed. May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. One local family fights the battle with the disease on a daily basis. Cystic Fibrosis leads people to believe that it is a lung disease. In reality, it is a cellular disease where the body does not use salts correctly. Salt in the body helps with mucus function. Mucus is found in most systems in the body, including the lungs and digestive tract. Storms ripped through the Steel Country area on April
24, uprooting trees and leaving many residents without
power. The major storm system barreled into the
Daingerfield and Hughes Springs area around 9 p.m.
High winds, coupled with a deluge of rain, wreaked havoc
on trees, businesses, and left debris littering the roads.

Kellie Davis displays her medal she received for participating in the 2015 Boston Marathon
on April 20. Mrs. Davis ran with the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge, who raises money

Students at all levels have a desire to belong or to fit in. Not all students, however, are the star in classroom or of the athletic variety. This is where the Chess clubs at West Elementary and South Elementary come in.
University Interscholastic League, or UIL, is the governing body for all academic and extra-curricular activities in schools. In addition to governing all sporting and band events, UIL also governs the academic contests most Texas public schools, including Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD, compete in. There are academic contests for all levels from first through twelfth grades. Competitions include spelling, math, writing, speaking contests, and more. Recently, UIL added a new academic contest known as Chess Puzzles.

Seventy years ago, what some consider one of the darkest, ugliest times in history, began when Hitler formed the Nazi party
in Germany. Most people who survived this time, whether soldiers in World War II or survivors of the Holocaust, have passed
on, taking their stories with them. Very few of the younger generation have had or will have the opportunity to ever hear a
first-hand account of this time period.

Hughes Springs High School students were not in their classrooms on Friday,
April 17, and for good reason. They were out “Doing Something.”

April, as well as having been Child Abuse Awareness month, is Autism Awareness month.
Autism is a disorder that, according to the Centers for Disease Control in 2014, is diagnosed in
1 out of every 68 children. Autism is known as a spectrum disorder, meaning that if affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.
