Mustangs remain undefeated as they head into District play

The Hughes Springs Mustangs stayed undefeated as they beat White Oak, Garrison, Tatum, and Joaquin.
The Mustangs played in the Elysian Fields tournament Feb. 28 through March 2. Zach Bassham made the All-Tournament Team.
Dylan Moore, Zach Bassham, Papa Chism, and Trent Shelton all had victories on the week.

The Mustangs opened District play March 5 when they hosted Queen City.

Mustang powerlifters are headed to State

Three Hughes Springs’ powerlifters are off to State competition, after competing in Regionals March 2.
Kaitlen Martin captured second place for the State qualifications as did Tara Ellis, with third place. Lacey Garamillo placed eighth. The girls participated in Regionals at Wills Point.

Kadarrian “Papa” Chism was the Regional Champion in powerlifting at the boys’ meet in Elkhart, and he is a State qualifier. Michael Martinez placed fourth at Regional competition, while Kyre Lewis placed fifth.

Powerlifters are headed to State

Two Daingerfield Lady Tiger powerlifters, Nicole Phillips and TaChrissa Boyd, have qualified for the State Powerlifting Meet. Nicole has qualified in the 220+ category and TaChrissa in the 148.
“These ladies, along with their entire team, have worked diligently all season long,” said Coach Engra Patt-Mason. “In doing so, they have brought home first and second place trophies. The Lady Tiger powerlifting team has had an awesome season.”
The state meet is March 16 in Corpus Christi.

Lady Colts attend area relays

The Hughes Springs Lady Colts attended the New Boston Middle School Lady Lion Relays on Feb 25. The seventh and eighth grade teams were fourth out of 11 teams. Due to rainy weather they did not compete in any field events.
The seventh grade relays were fourth in the 4X100, fifth in the 4X800, and third in the 4X400. The relay teams consisted of Peyton Blythe, Aliyah Crowder, Tamara Jones, Kennedi Northam, Charlie Mae Reeves, Jaley Wallace, Cypress Wright, and Maria Gonzales.
Wright received first place in the 400-meter dash and third in the 800-meter run, Wallace received third in the 300 meter hurdles, Crowder got third in the 100-meter dash, Kirbie Young received sixth in the mile, and Haley Fitzgerald received third in the 2400-meter run.

Lady Mustangs break even in tournament

The Lady Mustang softball team went 3-3 in the Two-Step – The Festival Tournament at Lear Park Feb. 28 through March 2. Lady Mustangs had wins over Quitman, Grace Community, and Concordia Lutheran. They lost to Tatum, Gilmer, and Benton, Ark.
 Pitching for the Lady Tigers were Destiny Gonzales, 1-0 3 IP, 3 ER, 4 hits; and Kaitlyn Morris, 2-3 24 IP, 4 ER, 32 hits, 12K’s.
 Top hitters on the weekend were Ashlin Roach, who went 10-18 hitting .556. She hit two doubles and two triples, drove in 8 runs, scored 11 runs, and stole six bases. Destiny Gonzales went 8-15 hitting, .533 for the tournament.She hit a double, drove in 6 runs, scored 6 runs, and stole a base.

Mustangs win Jefferson tournament on Feb. 21

Varsity
Hughes Springs’ varsity baseball team started the season with 5 wins and 0 loses.
The Mustangs beat Atlanta 5-0, Quitman 3-2, New Diana 8-2, Daingerfield 9-2, and Jefferson 14-2.  Hughes Springs was the Jefferson Tournament champions. Winning pitchers for the tournament games were Zach Bassham, Trent Shelton, Papa Chism, and Dylan Moore.

JV
The Hughes Springs JV’s went 4-1 in the Hughes Springs tournament. The JV’s beat Jefferson, Queen City, and Elysian Fields.  Zane Hanks, Jake Moore, Dazhon Hartsfield, Devin Carpenter, Dylan Dewitt all pitched well that weekend. The team benefitted from key hits by Greg Morgan, John Willis, Cody Pilgrim, and Jaylon Neal.

Lady Mustangs win the bronze division

The Hughes Springs’ softball team went 5-1 Feb. 22 and 23, winning the bronze division in the Longview Two Step Tournament.
On Friday the Lady Mustangs went 2-1, defeating McLeod 15-11 and Grand Saline 5-0, losing only to New Diana 5-4. On Saturday they went 3-0 defeating Bloomburg 19-0, Arp 14-4, and Maud 14-6.
Kaitlyn Morris threw 21 innings, giving up 16 hits, 3 earned runs, and striking out 19.
Leading hitters for the Lady Mustangs were Halie Pippin, who went 11 for 19, hitting .579 on the weekend with 7 runs scored, 12 RBI’s, and two stolen bases and Ashlin Roach, who went 11 for 20, hitting .550 for the tournament with 9 runs scored, 11 RBI’s, four doubles, three triples and stealing two bases.
Siera Baird and Becca Crossland both hit .500 on the weekend. Crossland was eight for 16 with two triples and 2 home runs, 9 RBI’s and three stolen bases. Baird was nine for 18 with two doubles, 11 RBI’s and three stolen bases.

Lady Tigers qualify for Regional powerlifting meet

Daingerfield’s Lady Tiger powerlifters are ready for the White Oak meet.

Lady Tigers Nicole Phillips, TaChrissa Boyd and Chablis Barber have qualified to compete in the Regional powerlifting meet. Chablis is the first Daingerfield freshman to ever qualify for this competition.
In the White Oak meet on Feb. 25, Nicole finished first in her weight division. TaChrissa and Chasity placed second, and Chablis was a sixth-place finisher.

Chasity and Adrianna Hill will be alternates at the Regional meet.

Tennis winners

Hughes Springs’ students fared well at the Liberty-Eylau Varsity Tennis Tournament Feb. 23. Hayden Smith captured first place in the boys’ singles, while Shane Finney and Andy Nolan placed first in the boys’ doubles. Luis Dorantes and Juan Rios took second place in the boys’ doubles. Smith, left, and Nolan are in the front row; and in the back, from left, are Rios, Dorantes, and Finney.

First Place Winner

Jacob Boyd, 8, of Hughes Springs, captured this first place trophy in Tae Kwon Do competition held in January at the United Family Martial Arts Regional Championship in Longview. Over 250 students attended the event. This is the first of six tournaments he is competing in. The second grader is the son of Todd and November Boyd of Hughes Springs.
