Hometown Person

Full name:   Becky Woodard Edwards.
I have lived in:  Fort Worth, Daingerfield, Naples, Texarkana and a few other places while I was in college.
Family:  Son, Marc Starr; daughter, Kelly Starr Thompson; stepson- Tommy Edwards; husband, Harold Edwards (deceased).
Pets:  Missy and Pepper, dogs;  Nubbins and Scarlett, cats.
I love my pets and I have had a number of pets in my life.
Occupation:  Math teacher in high school for 40 years mainly in Daingerfield and Pittsburg.

Happenings

Lunch
The Twentieth Century Club will hold its annual soup and sandwich lunch at the First Baptist Church in Daingerfield’s Fellowship Hall on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Proceeds of the lunch go toward scholarships.

Special Services
Williams Chapel Baptist Church will have special services at 10 a.m. on Oct. 19. Joyce Thurkal of Faith Holy Temple in Gilmer and Beulah Howard will speak. For further information, call 903-204-8136.

Historical Marker
There will be a Texas Historical Medallion Dedication ceremony at Pleasant Hill Center, 2722 Farm-to-Market Road 1399 in Linden at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. This is for the Pleasant Hill School Restoration Project. Refreshments will be served.

Two blocked punts of countless Pirate fumbles added up to a 34-7 Daingerfield District opener win Friday night in Pirate stadium.
A Halloween Carnival will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Avinger School.
30 YEARS AGO
Tom Blair, a native of Avinger, has been chosen as the Resident of the Month for October at the Hughes Springs Convalescent Home.
The Wildflower square dance club met Thursday evening, Oct. 6, at the National Bank of Hughes Springs.
The Salem District Ladies Auxiliary met with Hughes Springs Missionary Baptist Church on Oct. 4 for the quarterly meeting.

Scarecrow Row

The Red Radiance Garden is building scarecrows again this year for the holidays. Working on the scarecrows, from left, top row, are Patsy Lancaster, Tara Day-Aleman, and Elsie Palmer. Silent Witness

Casey Cox, brother of family violence victim Karen Cox Smith, spoke at the Silent Witness program held Sunday at Daingerfield City Park. Survivor Amanda Bailey also told her story. Morris County Attorney Steven Cowan spoke, as did Martha Baker representing Ounce of Prevention and members of Sheltered Agencies for Families in East Texas. The event remembered those lost to family violence and those who survived.

Kasling elected to board of directors

Mayo Kasling Jr., president of First National Bank of Hughes Springs was elected to the board of directors of the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT). This appointment was announced during the Independent Bankers Association of Texas 39th Annual Convention held in San Antonio recently.
Mr. Kasling has been president and chief executive officer of First National Bank of Hughes Springs since 1985. Under his leadership, the bank has expanded from a one-bank facility to the current 10 bank branches that include Liberty City, Omaha, Atlanta, Daingerfield, Jefferson, Harleton, Winona, Maud, Redwater and Queen City.

Festival winners are announced

Winners of the country fair during the Daingerfield Days Steel Country Festival have been announced.  
In the jams, jellies and preserves, Marie Williams won first place with Sue Gilliam taking second. Steve Williams won first place in the salsa category.
Mrs. Gilliam placed first in the relish category with sweet relish and third place with corn relish, with Mrs. Williams placing second with pickle relish.

Cass County Grand Jury Report

During a one day Grand Jury session Aug. 23, Cass County Criminal District Attorney Clint E. Allen states that 101 new indictments were handed down.  Below are the names and offenses of those individuals who were indicted and have been arrested:

Scholarship

Bill and Rosalie Chambers established a perpetual scholarship at Northeast Texas Community College in memory of Mary Jane Coker. The Mary Jane Coker Memorial Scholarship will be for available for students from Titus County majoring in general academic studies. Rosalie Chambers, right, presents the gift to Dr. Jonathan McCullough, vice president for advancement.
