Local man takes to clear blue skies

The movie ‘Fly Away Home’ left an impact on a local resident who has spent the last year and a half literally ‘taking to the skies’. Ken Kennedy of the Jenkins Community began flying in November of 2012 and has accumulated more than 72 hours of flying time.

Lone Star residents will not see a rise in property taxes Council set tax rate and adopted budget

There were no public comments at the public hearing for setting the proposed tax rate and adopting the proposed budget at the Lone Star City Council on Aug. 28. The hearing was closed and the council went into session setting the tax rate at $.50 per $100 valuation anda dopting the proposed 2014-15 budget. The tax rate is the same as the previous year. The proposed budget for 2014-15 is $1,650,228, compared to last year’s budget of $1,296,416.

Economic Development Board appoints its new secretary

Devon Whatley was appointed as the new secretary/treasurer for the Lone Star Economic Development Board at its Aug. 25 meeting. Mrs. Whatley was also placed as the signatory on the Economic Development Corporation’s bank account and former secretary Ruth Nash was removed.

Texas sets waterfowl seasons for 2014-15

Duck populations are the highest since North American surveys began in 1955, and as a result Texas will enjoy for the 20th consecutive year the most liberal waterfowl hunting season framework allowable.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved waterfowl seasons for Texas at its Aug. 21 public hearing in Houston.

Fixing up the edges

The new elementary classroom wing is completed at the Hughes Springs Independent School District. Work continues behind the wing as the school plans a multi-purpose building for elementary physical education during the day. After school other groups can use it, according to Superintendent Rick Ogden. A new ag building will also be constructed behind the high school.

Sidewalk work continues

Work has begun in the recent phase of the Daingerfield Downtown Enhancement Program. Workers began at the Daingerfield City Park and continued east on Webb Street toward downtown. They have begun work last week on Scurry Street between Something Special and Mother and Daughter Beauty Salon.
