United States Rural Community Development initiative grants are available

USDA Rural Development Rural Community Development Initiative Program provides grants of $50,000 to $300,000 to Intermediary organizations who train recipient organizations on topics such as housing development, economic development, capacity building, housing preservation, and renewable energy. The recipient then provides training to the residents in their service area.

Prospects good for dove season in Texas

Most folks don’t usually look forward to Mondays, but Texas dove hunters will be making an exception this year. The traditional Sept. 1 dove season opening day in the North and Central Zones fell on Labor Day Monday.

Learning at home is important

Pamela Lincoln Cass County Extension Agent Family and Consumer Sciences Once a child enters school to receive an education, some parents tend to assign all learning to school without considering any other learning. The fact is that a child continues to learn at home, also. Each parent is a teacher, and the home is an around-the-clock learning environment. Every interaction between parent and child should be a teaching and learning interaction.

Work Scholarship Program

The Northeast Texas Community College Foundation recently received a scholarship donation from the Kiwanis Club of Pittsburg. The $500 gift is designated for the new Work Scholarship Program at NTCC. Small engine repair classes to begin at local college

Are you new to small engines and just don’t know where to start? If so, the Northeast Texas Community College Continuing Education Department has an upcoming course for you. Small Engine Repair for the Beginner will be offered on Thursday nights from September 25 through November 13. The class meets from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the Pittsburg High School Career and Technology Building.

Emergency medical services vehicle to be based in Hughes Springs

Approval for an emergency medical services vehicle to be housed in Hughes Springs was approved by the Hughes Springs City Council at its Aug. 19 meeting. Arnie Spiers, an official with Champion Emergency Medical Services, spoke to the council.

School board sets tax rate, adopts budget

The tax rate will remain the same for those in the Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District. At the Aug. 18 meeting, the school board approved keeping the same tax rate of $1.154599 per $100 valuation, the same rate as last year.
